She is a past president of the Hidalgo County Bar Association and spent three years as co-editor-in-chief of The Appellate Advocate. She writes and lectures constantly on appellate practice — including presentations on trucking broker liability and federal preemption, Chapter 18 medical-expense affidavits, and personal injury jury charges.

Her training built the foundation. After a 1999 anthropology degree from Texas A&M University, she earned her J.D. magna cum laude from Baylor Law School in 2002, serving as editor-in-chief of the Baylor Law Review and writing briefs for Baylor’s ABA moot court team. She then clerked for Thomas R. Phillips, former Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, and later spent four years as senior staff attorney to Justice Gina Benavides at the Thirteenth Court of Appeals — meaning she has seen appeals decided from inside the court itself. She practiced with Jenkens & Gilchrist’s trial and appellate group, was a partner at Smith Law Group, founded her own firm in 2016, and taught constitutional law and criminal evidence at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for many years.
