April Strahan

April Strahan is a partner at The Ammons Law Firm in Houston, and her name is attached to one of the most consequential judgments in recent American history. Representing three families who were injured or lost loved ones in the Sutherland Springs church shooting, she obtained a judgment exceeding $50.65 million — the first case in history in which the United States government was held civilly liable for a mass shooting. Few injury lawyers anywhere have carried a case of that magnitude to judgment.

Her preparation for high-stakes trial work started before law school. A Beaumont native, Strahan earned her B.A. from the University of Houston and then moved to Boston, where she worked as an assistant trial director for a jury consulting firm — attending mock trials around the country and assisting with jury research — and managed a facility running focus groups for national and international businesses. She understands how jurors actually think because studying them was her first job.

She returned home for law school at South Texas College of Law, where she won multiple advocacy awards in moot court and mock trial competitions, served as managing editor of the Construction Law Journal, sat on the South Texas Law Review, and received the Alumni Association Award for best law review article for her student comment. Her internships spanned the federal bench (U.S. District Judge David Hittner), the state appellate courts (Judge Tim Taft of Texas’s First Court of Appeals), and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. After graduating in 2006, she served as briefing attorney to Judge Michael Keasler on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals — the state’s highest criminal court — before joining Ammons as an associate in 2007 and earning her way to partnership.

Recognition has followed: Texas Super Lawyers named her to its Rising Stars list every year from 2013 through 2019, and the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys included her among its 10 Best Attorneys in Texas for exceptional client service from 2017 through 2019. She has published in the South Texas Law Review and the SMU Law Review, written mediation-preparation guidance for TRIAL magazine, serves on the board of directors of the Attorneys Information Exchange Group, and is admitted in the Western, Eastern, and Southern federal districts of Texas.
